SERVING AGES 3-15

Abintra Students Give "More than Warmth"

Upper Elementary students recently visited Wharton Elementary for an annual quilt-making service project. They worked with Judith Meeker, founder of the More than Warmth project, and students in her English Language Learners class at Wharton. They created personalized squares to comprise quilts which will go to children in Sudan and Haiti, conveying both physical and emotional warmth.

More than Warmth is an educational project for students of all ages to learn about world cultures. It fosters understanding, knowledge and compassion among cultures through nonviolent, nonpolitical, and nonreligious means.

Abintra Upper Elementary received this email from Judith after their visit:

"It was wonderful yesterday! To see the students working together was great. I was a little nervous beforehand as I had a third grader wailing in there and another boy being pretty mouthy, however he stopped when I asked him to! I loved seeing the girls grab a partner. They all seemed honored. Thank you again for reaching out to spend time with us."  -- Judith Meeker

A few months later, the quilts were delivered to people living in Sudan and Haiti.  Meeker sent photos of Sudanese refugees who received the Abintra/Wharton quilts (shown here).
